How is myofascial release (MFR) different from massage?

  • Massage is the rubbing or kneading of the body’s soft tissues, using oil or cream to glide along skin and push into “knots.”
  • MFR is an oil-free treatment done on clean, dry skin while clients wear loose fitting clothes. It is a whole body therapy where MFR therapists look for restrictions in a person’s fascial pattern based on posture, temperature, texture, and pain sensation.  They gently press into the connective tissue and wait for it to release. Sometimes the therapist may work in an area that seems unrelated to your pain because these areas may hold a systemic “drag” or corresponding restriction. Many people find that a single MFR treatment “lasts” much longer than a single massage, acupuncture, or chiropractic treatment.  With several sessions in close succession, fascial patterns can be released, rehydrated, and reset, thereby greatly diminishing or resolving pain entirely.

What is fascia (FOSH-a)?

Fascia is a tough connective tissue that spreads throughout the body in a three-dimensional web.  Trauma, including major accidents and surgeries, as well as posture and inflammation can create restrictions in this system.  These restrictions can put excessive pressure on muscles, organs, nerves, and blood vessels.  Like a “snag” in a sweater, fascial strain patterns can cause unexplained, chronic pain and dysfunction in seemingly unrelated parts of the body.  Fascial restrictions cannot been seen with x-rays, CAT scans, or MRIs so pain often goes undiagnosed.  When using JFB-MFR, gentle pressure and extended time, the fascia releases a layer at a time.

How do I know if I have fascial restrictions?

If you are feeling tight, compressed, or restricted, then you have fascial restrictions. That constant shoulder pain, those frequent headaches, the “pulled muscle” that keeps coming back. Too often we get used to little (or big) aches and pains, thinking they’re just part of aging, or normal wear and tear. They are not.  You don’t have to live in pain.

How many sessions does it take?

Every person is different.  MFR can significantly reduce your pain and even eliminate it altogether, but healing takes time.  While MFR has been known to resolve issues in 1-3 treatments, if you’ve had a condition for several years, it’s unlikely to be “fixed” within a couple of sessions.  The cumulative effects of MFR are immense because we peel back old patterns a layer at a time.  If you are ready to make a serious commitment to resolve your pain and improve mobility, buy a package.  Repeat as needed.

Packages

Prioritize your healing.  Dysfunctional fascial patterns need to be disrupted and replaced.  Several treatments close together are the best way to create lasting change.  While packages include a discount, they are not intended for that purpose. A package is  a client’s commitment to healing.  It is a targeted, intensive course of treatment designed to address the cause, rather than manage symptoms.  All four sessions must be used by one person within six weeks.

What should I wear to a treatment?

**NO LOTION** MFR needs the texture of clean, dry skin so please do not wear lotion on treatment days.  Because motion/movement can be a part of therapy, plan to wear loose fitting exercise clothes, like soccer shorts and a loose tank top.  A low impact bra with straps that can be easily moved to the side, one that clasps in the back, is best.  Some people wear a swimsuit (two piece).

What should I expect at my first treatment?

After an intake discussion, we will start the session by looking at your body in gravity, both standing and lying down, to identify postural imbalances.  It’s best to limit talking so you and Amy can focus on feeling into your body.  Most clients find treatment to be very relaxing.  Once Amy begins work, it’s important to stay present in your body, feeling the tissues between her hands.  Sometimes sensations may radiate in completely different areas of the body.  This is good feedback to share.  Continue to bring your mind back into your body.  Stay present.

How is John Barnes’ MFR different from other forms of MFR?

“Myofascial release” and “fascia” are buzzwords today because these concepts are relatively new to the bodywork community and have shown great promise.  However, not all MFR is the same.  Many therapists are calling their deep, painful work “MFR.”  Other therapists don’t hold into the fascial barrier long enough to make a true difference.  The cornerstones of the John Barnes’ Approach (JFB/MFR) are pressure and time.  JFB/MFR is gentle, and it never forces.  At just the right depth, MFR therapists hold their hands in the same place for 3-5 minutes and often much longer.  In this way, the body will relax and release, allowing for lasting change at the deepest levels.  See www.myofascialrelease.com for more information.
